>It was a lucky break for jazz music when Englishman Colin Dawson and Munich-born Bernd Lhotzky got together in a trumpet and piano duo. On the one hand, an internationally experienced ace trumpeter with a classical education and wide expressive range running the gamut from virtuoso lyricism to powerful soloing in a straight-ahead oldtime format. On the other hand, an academically-trained pianist renowned the world over for his competence in an enormously sophisticated style that was started in 1920's and 30's New York by Fats Waller and other greats: the Harlem stride piano. Bernd Lhotzky's rapidly mounting popularity as a "stride genius" is witnessed by the fact that he can already be heard on no fewer than seven CD's! His new recording is entitled Sophisticated, and that's just what it is, combining the cultivated and refined with the far-out.<
